“Medical laboratory assistants play an essential role in our healthcare system, collecting blood samples, processing specimens and, in some cases, performing electrocardiograms (ECGs),” said Larry Heinzlmeir, VP of Marketing for Vancouver Career College.
“The Medical Laboratory Assistant program will help students gain the fundamental skills and knowledge to enter this career field.”
The 37-week program combines lectures, demonstrations and hands-on exercises to give students a solid foundation in the techniques and practices used in various medical labs.
They will study:
- Medical terminology
- Anatomy
- Physiology and clinical chemistry
- Quality assurance
- Laboratory math
- Safety and aseptic techniques
- Hematology
- Cytology
- Histology
- Standards of practices
- Ethics and legislation.
Prior to graduation, students will participate in a mandatory clinical placement that will give them the opportunity to apply their training and gain practical experience in a medical lab environment.
Along with their diploma, graduates will also be eligible to obtain a Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate through the British Columbia Society of Laboratory Science (BCSLS).
