Extension Cords

Extension cords are only a temporary connection and should never be linked together.

As students start to make plans to move into residence or their first apartment, CSA International wants them to keep safety in mind.

CSA recently released a series of tips that are easy to follow and can save student lives.

Carbon Monoxide

Beware the silent killer. They recommend that you get an alarm for your bedroom and “check for the mark from an accredited certification organization, such as the Blue Flame from CSA International.”

Fire

The same old advice is still good advice. Make sure you test your smoke alarms and keep those batteries fresh.

Space Heaters

If you’re using a space heater, use it for just that: heat your space. Never use it to dry your clothes or put it under the covers to warm up your bed. You may laugh, but it happens.

Power bars and extension cords

If you have limited or hidden power outlets, you might be tempted to string extension cords across your room to plug in your computer, TV, or lights. Don’t. The CSA says, “Extension cords are only a temporary connection and should never be linked together. Appliances should plug directly into power sources without stretching. When unplugging an electrical cord, pull on the plug, not the cord.”

Avoid dollar store solutions

Buying cheap power bars or appliances may seem necessary on a student budget, but the CSA reminds you that you’re sacrificing quality.

“Counterfeiters often cut corners on safety to reduce production costs. While you may think you’re saving a few bucks, bargains can often cost more in the long run and can even cost you your life! Never compromise on safety by buying fake products.”
