A Fringe Benefit of Graduating from College?

It seems there’s nothing a college education can’t help you achieve. For one St. Clair College student, her convocation ceremony set the perfect stage for a proposal she couldn’t resist: engagement to her boyfriend of five years.

The end of June brought not only the completion of a veterinary technician diploma for student Alysha McNamee, but also a surprise she didn’t count on. After receiving her diploma and posing for a photo, McNamee was shocked to see her boyfriend walking across the stage towards her. He then proposed in traditional style, on bended knee, before hundreds of cheering students, teachers and guests.

While some of us might cringe at such a public display of a personal moment, McNamee actually stipulated that her boyfriend’s wedding proposal better be something ‘outstanding’ if he wanted a positive response. It seems if you set the bar high, in education as well as in life, things happen.

While a marriage proposal is not a guaranteed outcome of attending St. Clair College, the school had no objections to allowing the two to pledge their devotion to each other during the important event. Perhaps they admired the courage and determination it took. “This has never happened before,” stated the director of marketing at St. Clair College.
