triOS College Promotes Women in Technology with Two New Scholarships
triOS College has just announced the creation of two new scholarships for women who are entering the growing technology sector. The “Women in Gaming” and “Women in Information Technology” scholarships – valued at $5,000 — are part of the college’s continuing commitment to women to pursue careers in the technology and video games sectors.
According to a study done by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), Canadian businesses are poised to hire more than 100,000 IT workers between now and 2016, which makes the technology sector one of the most promising paths for establishing a career with considerable potential for growth. However, it remains a field in which women don’t participate as fully as men do.
According to Ray Sharma, President and Founder of the mobile games studio XMG, “Our single biggest issue in game development is the lack of female talent. There is a massive disconnect between the female consuming audience and those that are developing games.”
That’s one of the reasons why triOS is working alongside employers like XMG: to ensure that women are given the opportunities and incentive to study in the field of technology, and help fulfil the demand for skilled employees.
“These scholarships are a definite indicator of how responsive triOS College is to the needs of both our employers and our students,” says Wendy Churchill, Director of Academic and Employment Services. “We listened to our employers when we revised the curriculum for our technology programs, and now we are answering their demand for more women in this sector by launching these scholarships. Students also benefit significantly as they will have the right skills to find employment and also receive financial assistance with these scholarships.”
Candidates can apply for the scholarships starting on May 6. Interested students can apply by logging onto a website and submitting an essay explaining why they should be awarded the scholarship. The winners will be announced on June 1, 2013.
