Dalton McGuinty and his Liberals were re-elected in last week’s provincial election, which may be a victory for Ontario’s college and university students. The Liberals have promised a grant that would slash Ontario’s tuition prices by as much as 30%.

“The vast majority of Ontarians voted for either a tuition fee freeze or reduction, and students call on all parties to work together to make sure voters get the 30 per cent fee reduction promised,” said Sandy Hudson, chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students – Ontario.

“The Liberal party was elected, in part, on a promise to reduce tuition fees and students will be pushing for the implementation of this promise for the winter semester in January.”

Ontario’s students have been promised a new tuition grant, in January, that will cut tuition for full-time dependent college and undergraduate students with family incomes under $160,000 by 30%. The Liberals also pledged to keep the cap on student debt frozen, while extending interest relief on loans for grads working in the not-for-profit sector.

“The provincial election highlighted the importance of post-secondary education to Ontarians. Students were pleased to see our priorities and proposals addressed throughout the campaign, and now we look forward to seeing these develop,” said Sean Madden, President of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA).

The Liberals also pledged a renewed commitment to sending workers back to school with Ontario’s Second Career program.

Hopefully this is actually implemented, and isn’t just another empty election promise.
