College Campuses are the Third Most Common Place for Laptop Theft
Lots of access to Wi-Fi and distracted young people seems like the perfect place to steal a laptop. And it is!
According to a report from Absolute Data’s Theft Recovery Team, college campuses jumped from the #5 spot to become the third most popular place to have your laptop stolen. More than 24,000 cases of burglary were reported from on-campus in 2009, with 12,000 swipes occurring in residence halls.
“Laptops are one of the most essential yet expensive tools that students need to complete college. With the majority of students now carrying laptops, campuses are prime locations for theft,” said Mark Grace, Vice President of Consumer Business, Absolute Software.
“We have seen countless cases where students have lost midterm assignments or even an entire semester’s worth of work after their laptops were stolen.”
According to data from McClatchy-Tribune Information Services:
- 10% of laptop computers will be stolen within the first 12 months of purchase.
- 90% of stolen laptops are never recovered.
- 57% of corporate crimes are linked to stolen laptops
Students can purchase various types of electronic and physical locks for their laptops. Even though a stolen laptop is now easier than ever to track and find, it seems some thieves still take the risk.
