More Chinese students who want to study abroad have looked to Canada.

The Ministry of Education of The People’s Republic of China recently released statistics that shows a record 1.27 million Chinese students studying abroad in 2010.

The ministry’s numbers also report that 285,000 of those students were new, a 24 per cent increase from 2009.

The ministry also reported many of those students land in Canada. Overall, over 90 per cent of Chinese students end up studying in Canada, the United States, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Singapore, France, Germany and Russia.

The Government of Canada reported that in 2009, Canada welcomed well over 50,000 Chinese students to our colleges and universities. All signs point to that number will grow even higher.

Experts point to China’s growing economy, as the catalyst for middle class families sending their children overseas to study.

Overall Canadian enrollment numbers continue to skyrocket, with a surge in international enrollment playing a major role. Canada now has 898,000 full-time university students, 4% and 32,000 more than in 2009.

More students who want to study abroad have looked to Canada in recent years, with the former hotspot Australia seeing a stark drop-off in international enrollment.
