Federal Government calls for proposals to fight violence against women.

Last week, The Federal Government marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by looking for solutions.

The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women asked Canadians for proposals to help protect women on university and college campuses.

“Our Government is taking targeted and effective action to end violence against women and girls,” said Minister Ambrose.

“By inviting proposals for projects that address violence against women and girls on university and college campuses, we are engaging young people to tackle a major health and safety issue.”

This request for proposals will be open until January 27th, 2012, with applications going to Status of Women Canada (SWC). SWC is a federal government organization that promotes the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.

With the help of SWC, the government’s support for community-based projects has grown from $10.8 million to nearly $19 million.

“Over the past several years, our government has taken action to help women be safer, more secure and more economically successful,” added Minister Ambrose.

“With funding from our government, we now have an opportunity to address the pressing issue of violence against women in university and college campus communities.”
