Ontario’s new OSAP mobile app aims to help students check their application status.
The McGuinty Government has taken a number of actions to make student loans easier and friendlier. However, not everyone feels they are steps forward.
Ontario’s new OSAP mobile app aims to help students get up-to-date information and check their application status on their smart phone.
“This new OSAP mobile app, along with recent OSAP enhancements and our new website, gives students the support they need to pursue their passion and achieve the career of their dreams,” said John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.
However, there are some who feel developing this app was a waste of time and money.
“An iPhone app is not going to help anyone pay off their already too-high student loan,” said Amalia Savva, a fourth-year University of Ottawa student and coordinator of the Education is a Right campaign.”
“Minister Milloy must have better plans for improving access to university than this.”
Sarah Jayne King, Vice-President, Finance at the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa echos those feelings. She said the government needs to focus on tax credits and grants, not mobile apps.
“While students appreciate the energy that the McGuinty Government is committing to OSAP reform, it is student-driven recommendations like those in the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario’s Our Bright Future: Student Financial Assistance policy proposals, that will truly improve access to postsecondary education.”

this is an insult, by putting an app, is the government saying that students are stupid? we aren’t stupid and are completely cepable of looking at our own finiances.. The government should really do something about transportation costs and textbook costs if they want to help..
i have never had to check anything relating to my osap funding while on-the-go, which is really the only reason for mobile apps. i am perfectly capable of handling my finances through the regular osap website. there is no reason for a mobile app. gov’t is very out-of-touch with our generation if they think that making a mobile app will help in any way.
