New Transfer Credit Program Makes Education Decisions Easier

The new centralized database provides students with the information they need to better plan their education.

Ontario is launching a new course-to-course database that’s designed to help students make sound decisions about their education. The centralized database, available at ONTransfer.ca, will inform students of the credits they need to complete a diploma or degree program, simplifying the transfer process for students who have accrued credits from different colleges and universities.

“The new Course-to-Course Transfer Guide highlights the commitment of colleges and universities to create positive change,” says Dominic Giroux, co-chair of Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer’s Board of Directors and president and vice-chancellor of Laurentian University. “As a sector, we are developing a truly comprehensive credit transfer system in Ontario, one that will provide maximum benefit to students.”

Approximately 21,500 students transfer within post-secondary institutions every year, with the majority transferring within business, health, social science, engineering and liberal arts. The new database may allow some students to save on tuition, travel and living expenses by earning credits towards a degree or diploma at a local college or university before transferring to another to complete their program.

Brad Duguid, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, adds that “[t]he new course-to-course database will also save students time and money by giving them the information they need to avoid repeating courses.”

In all, the province is investing upwards of $70 million towards improving credit transfers between 2011 and 2016.
