The new program aims to help the civil engineering industry fill the demand for qualified, certified professionals.

Vancouver-based Brighton College has announced that intake has begun for its newest program, the 35-week Structural and Building Technology Diploma. The next start date for the program is October 21, 2013.

Brighton College created the diploma program as a response to the increasing demand for workers within the civil engineering industry in Vancouver and surrounding areas, where engineering firms are constantly looking to hire skilled, qualified and certified individuals.

Lectures, Workshops and Practicum

The program combines 31 weeks of experiential lectures and workshops with a 4-week practicum at a small or mid-sized engineering firm within the Lower Mainland, giving students both course-based knowledge and important hands-on, real life work experience.

Students are taught civil engineering bridge and pavement methodologies, local building code, project estimating, construction inspection and management and high level computer aided design modeling software. AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D and Tekla are also taught to ensure that students obtain the skills needed to be successful within the industry.

Specifically, courses include Building Piping Services, Structural Design and Analysis, as well as Concrete and Structural Steel Design and Detailing. Graduates are required to successfully complete all courses and carry out a 4-week work practicum.

Graduates may find entry-level positions as construction technicians, civil engineering drafters, steel and concrete detailers, project coordinators and more. The Structural and Building Technology diploma program is also a perfect starting point for those who want to follow a path towards careers as construction technologists, construction inspectors, civil engineering inspectors, plan checkers and construction superintendents, among many others.

$1,000 Scholarships Available for October Start Dates

Students who register for the Structural and Building Technology program will receive $1,000 towards their tuition fees. This one-time scholarship is only available for the October 21st, 2013 start date. Eligible students must complete all courses in succession and maintain a good academic standing.

Brighton College now offers five programs within the engineering technology field: AutoCAD Drafting and Design Specialist Diploma, Architectural Design and Building Technician Diploma, Construction Drafting Technician Diploma, Civil Infrastructure Design Technology Diploma, and now the Structural and Building Technology Diploma. Interested prospective students should contact Brighton College for more information on their program of choice.
