Walmart Announces Semi-finalists in Green Student Challenge

Last September, Walmart Canada called on students to come up with business solutions that would save money and the planet. Last week, they announced the 5 semi-finalists that will compete for the grand prize of $100,000.

“The Walmart Green Student Challenge is all about engaging the next wave of business leaders,” said Shelley Broader, president and CEO of Walmart Canada.

“I am very impressed with the calibre of submissions we have received. It is clear that the students understand the importance of imbedding business sustainability into the core of a company’s operations.”

The five semi-finalist teams are:

• Peter Waugh, Laura Higgins, Brian Eshpeter and Carolyn Nalder – University of Calgary
• Mark Desjardine – University of Western Ontario
• Arthur Yip, Jake Yeung and Alan Thai – University of Waterloo
• Hassan Valiji – York University
• Stephanie MacLean, Kurt Boone, Andrew Weatherbee and Omar Hassan – Cape Breton University

Semi finalists will now move on to the contest finale at the TMX in downtown Toronto on February 29.

“Semi-finalists will have just a few minutes to convince the panel that their idea is the best,” said Broader.

“It should be a good show.”
