Vancouver Community College Thinks Green
Vancouver Community College is watching their carbon footprint by hiring someone to keep an eye on it. The school recently added Wendy Avis to their team, in their newly created manager of environment and sustainability position.
“By integrating sustainability values and practices at the college, I hope to harness the power of everyone at VCC to make us a leader in reducing our environmental footprint,” said Avis.
Avis brings 15 years of experience in the sustainability field. Her career has seen her work for B.C. Hydro and Environment Canada prior to the college. She has also done extensive field research on climate change policy and reducing emissions.
“We only have one planet, and it is everyone’s responsibility to care for it for future generations,” said Avis.
The college has undertaken a number of green projects lately. In recent months, they launched a college-wide awareness campaign to reduce power consumption and paper use. They also hosted a Green Fair to educate people about green transportation options, conservation, and local food choices.
Vancouver Community College has an environmental sustainability advisory group, who meet once a month. They are also in the process of approving an environmental framework for the college.
