Foreign Enrolment at British Universities and Colleges Grows By a Third
Universities and colleges in the United Kingdom are seeing record numbers for enrolment from mainland European countries. A whopping 125,000 students from European Union member states studied at a British school. That is a jump of 35,000, compared to the numbers from 10 years ago.
This is according to the numbers from the most recent annual report published by Universities UK, which offers data covering more than 130 universities and colleges across Britain.
EU Students now make up 5 per cent of the total student population on UK campuses. That number was 4.6 per cent 10 years ago.
The same study showed that 7,260 undergraduates came from France, 6,800 from Germany, 6,740 from Ireland, 5,490 from Poland and 4,745 from Greece.
Part of the appeal of UK-based institutions is the fact that undergraduates from the EU are subsidised by the taxpayer. They are also eligible for the same low-interest Government loans offered to their British classmates.
Next year, however undergraduates from Britain and Europe will have to pay approximately £9,000 in fees, which is almost three times the current £3,375 maximum.
The foreign increase was around twice as fast as the spike in enrolment among British students.
