Canada’s Career Colleges Ask Government to Sell Them Overseas
Canada already has a record number of foreign students on its campuses, but our career colleges would like to see much more. That’s why The National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) recently lobbied the federal government to invest more in marketing our colleges overseas.
“If the colleges are regulated and are good enough for domestic students, why aren’t they good enough for international students,” said NACC president and president of Ottawa’s Herzing College, Michael McAllister.
Canada has made recent advances to replace Australia as the go-to college and university destination for students from countries such as India. However, they still face barriers such as the Chinese government cautioning their students about British Columbia’s 40 per cent student default rate.
The NACC is asking the government to do more to attract foreign talent and minds to Canadian campuses by making it easier for students to study here. They have proposed changes to the student visa regulations that would allow career college graduates to live in Canada for at least one year after graduation.
“The minute they graduate, they have to leave the country,” said McAllister.
“It’s not a very alluring proposal to an international student.”
