Algonquin College Event Management Students Raise $31,000 for Children’s Wish
The Event Management students at Algonquin College are making some wishes come true for kids, and giving back to a great cause.
A partnership, called “Creating Magic,” between Children’s Wish and Algonquin College’s Event Management program has raised $31,000 for some very worthy children.
“There are several words that could be used to describe the individuals involved with this amazing undertaking,” said Michel Savard, Dean of the School of Hospitality and Tourism.
“But ‘total dedication’ is what stands out when I think of the faculty and staff of the Event Management Program.”
The students worked with no financial budget and turned zero dollars into $31,000 for children aged three to 17 who are living with a life threatening illness. Their efforts bring this year’s total revenue to a $115,000 and pushed the four year total to over $300,000.
“We fully expected this to be a one-time only experience,” said Lynn Noel, Fundraising and Volunteer Coordinator for the National Capital Chapter, “but remarkably and thankfully, the community, the students and the faculty responded to Children’s Wish as the best fit.”
In 2008, Algonquin’s Event Management faculty offered an “experiential” style of learning in matching the program to a charity partner. Their approach has proven to be extremely successful and helped them win the AFP Outstanding Group Philanthropic award in 2010, after being nominated by Children’s Wish.
