Canadian Students Want to Study Green Programs at University

Demand for green careers matches demand for companies to run greener in the new economy.

A new report’s shows that today’s University student wants to study for green jobs and careers.

The enrollment and demand for university level training in environmentally responsible, or green sciences is on the rise.

Eco Canada’s report, Post-Secondary Graduation Research: Enrollment and Graduation Rates from Environment-Related College and University Programs, revealed a serious spike in enrollment and interest in green education.

Their data shows that Canadian universities saw their enrolment in environment-related programs increase 40 per cent between 2000 and 2007, while overall enrolment jumped 25.4% over the same time period. The environmental program graduation rate grew 10.9 per cent from 2000 to 2007.

Many areas of study are new or were virtually unknown which has led to explosive growth in many programs. Between 2000 and 207, Land use planning and management/development’s enrolment jumped by a staggering 1900 per cent. Elsewhere, enrolment for Conservation biology has jumped by 783.3 per cent in the same timeframe.

The demand for environmental careers matches the demand for companies to run greener in the new economy. Eco Canada also reports that industry expenditures on energy efficiency were $1.97 billion in 2006 and grew at 16 per cent between 2002 and 2006.
