NAIT Donates Almost 15,000 Hours to Charity
The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s staff and students have donated nearly 2,000 work days to Habitat for Humanity.
Their over 15,000 hours of service has earned NAIT recognition as the Habitat for Humanity’s top corporate volunteer for 2010.
“The Corporate Volunteer Award is given to those organizations who stand head and shoulders above the rest in terms of volunteering,” said volunteer manager Angela Robichaud, on NAIT’s website.
“Many NAIT programs have donated time over the years, but when I met James (Ayres) back in 2006, it was his passion that sparked a long-term relationship between us and the departments we have been working with, which have resulted in the bulk of the volunteer hours contributed from NAIT.”
Students from many of the school’s different programs have contributed in various ways. Their Landscape Architectural Technology, Interior Design Technology, Millwork and Carpentry students have helped to build homes and renovate Habitat’s offices.
The Culinary Arts students did their part by providing lunch for the students who were working on site.
“The students come with awesome attitudes and skills and are very engaged. All of their instructors are very supportive and invite us to give presentations to the students beforehand. Even a few of the students have come back after to volunteer on their own,” added Robichaud.
