New funding is expected to create as many as 3,500 new jobs for young Canadians.

Last summer was a cold one, job-wise. Across Canada the student summer employment numbers sunk to 19.2%, the second lowest number on record in Canadian history, according to Stats Can.

The federal government is looking to heat things up this summer for students, by investing $10-million in the Canada Summer Jobs Program. This is the first such increase since a funding cut in 2006.

“Student summer jobs will employ more students in the short-term and will also provide skills development in the long-term,” said David Molenhuis, National Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students.

“Only through government investment is this possible.”

The funding and support is expected to create as many as 3,500 new jobs for young Canadians, and Molenhuis said this help couldn’t have come at a better time.

“The Canada Summer Jobs Program creates jobs for students that would not otherwise exist… After record levels of unemployment and the vast majority of students facing tuition fee increases it is high time that the federal government do something about it.”

It was also announced today that a number of communities received funding for the Skills Link program, which helps youth facing employment barriers to find work. The program targets single parents, Aboriginal youth, youth with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas, and high school drop-outs.
