The Government of Canada Backs Student Athletes
May the games begin! Today The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) received the funding needed to deliver their various national championship events.
The Government of Canada’s 2010–2011 contribution of $332,900 will go to funding national championship events for CCAA for 2010–2011. The money will fund athletes and officials travelling to national championship events in sports like basketball, golf, soccer, volleyball, badminton and cross-country running.
The CCAA will also receive $80,000 for the Female Apprentice Coach Program through Sport Canada’s Sport Support Program.
“This program assists in the development of women coaches in Canada,” said the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport).
“The training of apprentice coaches encourages women of all ages to participate fully in their preferred sport. The success of the Female Apprentice Coach Program means we are providing athletes with the leadership and support they need to excel in sport.”
The strides Canadian athletes have made in recent years were never more obvious than during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. After winning 7 gold medals in 2006, Canadian athletes doubled that amount and won a record-setting 14 gold medals at the 2010 games.
The CCAA will continue to encourage athletic participation at the college level, while helping student athletes succeed.
