Ontario to Boost International Enrollment

Ontario saw over 38,000 international students in 2009-10.

Ontario’s campuses are known for the diversity of their student bodies, and the provincial government wants to build on that.

Last week, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced a new Ontario Trillium Scholarship for international students, while speaking at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The scholarships will offer 75 international students $40,000 per year for up to four years to pursue their PHD in Ontario. McGuinty said The Province will sink $20 million into the program, while the participating schools will contribute $10 million.

According to the Government of Ontario, during 2009-10, Ontario saw over 38,000 international students (More than 12,000 from China and Hong Kong alone) enrolled at postsecondary institutions, which pumped $1 billion into the economy.

The Council of Ontario Universities (COU) has applauded the move to attract international talent. Bonnie M. Patterson, President and CEO of COU said, “We applaud the Premier and his government for their commitment to internationalization and for the Premier’s dynamic efforts to promote Ontario’s universities abroad, most recently on the mission to China and Hong Kong.”

“Universities are critical to the province’s success in attracting talent and leveraging international relationships. They are a tremendous two-way conduit to different countries, their people and their expertise.”
