Two scholarships are now up for grabs for queer students across Canada. Out on Bay Street, the Toronto organization that was founded to connect lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans business students, is accepting applications for the scholarship until July 31st.

According to Out on Bay Street’s president, Michael Mirpuri, the goal of the LGBTQA Scholarship Awards is to support developing leaders in the community.

“The awards recognize excellence in the LGBTQA student community across Canada,” says Mirpuri. “The purpose is to not only provide students with the financial resources that they need to achieve their goals, but also to inspire students to be active leaders in their community and to identify role models among Canada’s LGBTQA youth.”

Students enrolled in Canadian colleges and universities, Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel (CEGEP) students and other post-secondary students enrolled in accredited programs who have completed at least one year of study are all eligible to apply for the scholarship. The recipients, says Mirpuri, “must have exemplified leadership, at minimum, in the LGBTQA community and personal and academic success.”

“Out On Bay’s mission is to facilitate the professional development of LGBTQA students,” says Liz McLachlin, a member of the organization’s Board of Advisors. “With ever-increasing tuition fees, Out On Bay Street’s scholarship will help defray some costs, creating even more opportunities for LGBTQA Canadians to succeed.”

The organization’s goal is to build a community of young queer professionals. It hosts monthly networking social events, as well as an annual conference of workshops, education opportunities and a career exhibition.

“In the coming month, we will also launch our National Ambassador Program to support our expansion goals and bursary subsidies for travel and accommodation for event delegates,” Mirpuri says. “We are continually interested in hearing from individuals that would like to get involved in our organization.”

The two $2,500 scholarship winners will be selected by an independent committee of professionals and community leaders. The two scholarship winners will be announced on September 21, 2013 in Toronto.
