Workopolis and DeVry Identify Top Skills and Degrees for 2012

As Canada’s college and university students prepare for the springtime career crunch, Workopolis and DeVry have done their part to help. They have published a list of what will be the most in-demand skills and degrees for the next year.

“The unemployment rate continues to hold above 7.5%, many employers are still struggling to find the talent they need to hire. How is that possible,” said author Peter Harris in an article at Workopolis.com.

“It’s largely caused by a disconnect between the skills that candidates have (or that they are promoting on their resumes) vs. what hiring managers are actually looking for.”

Harris also pointed to The Devry Institute’s recently released annual “The Job Preparedness Indicator,” a survey designed to measure the disparity between candidate skills and employer expectations.

According to the report, the top in-demand skills that surveyed employers want are:

  • Strategic perspective,
  • High integrity,
  • Global outlook,
  • Strong base work ethic/dependable
  • Accountability.

Also, the top bachelor’s degrees right now are:

  • Finance
  • Accounting
  • Computer and Information Sciences
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Business Administration/Mgmt.
  • Management Information Systems
  • Computer Engineering
  • Economics
  • Logistics/Materials Management
