Charitable Students Turn $67 into $28,930
You can do a lot of good if you’re industrious and generous.
Some smart and savvy students from Royal Roads University have taken a modest investment of $67 and turned it into a whopping $28,930 worth of donations to local charities.
RRU’s Bachelor of Commerce students raised the funds as part of their school’s 12th annual Venture Challenge. The event involves teams competing to raise the most money, while starting with an investment of only $1 per member. The teams then try to make as much money as possible in five weeks, by coming up with profit-making events and ideas. In the end, all proceeds are donated to a chosen charitable group.
This year, the winning team hosted a “yoga-thon” as well as a choral event to raise an impressive $8,260 for B.C. Children’s Hospital. They donated the money to honour Molly Campbell, the Victoria baby who was diagnosed with leukemia in December and is currently being treated at the hospital.
Other Venture Challenge teams donated their earnings to support charitable groups such as the Mustard Seed Food Bank, KidSport, the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children and the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Foundation.
