Northern College is Awarded Research Status

Earlier this week, Northern College announced they’ve been approved by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), which now qualifies them for NSERC funding.

Northern has establish themselves as valuable experts in fields like water resources, materials joining, cold weather construction methods and materials, and mining. With their new designation, they can pursue applied research funding.

“Recognition of our eligibility means that Northern College researchers will now be able to apply for federal research grants through NSERC’s College and Community Innovation and Idea to Innovation programs,” said Fred Gibbons, president of Northern College.

It was also recently announced that the Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII) awarded $20,000 to Northern to fund the development of applied research policies and structures.

“Northern College’s strengths in technology, health and veterinary sciences open the door to numerous applied research opportunities that will assist northern industry to meet challenges and explore innovative solutions,” said Gibbons.

The college can also now apply for funding from the Tri-Council Agencies:

• Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
• Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
• The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

“Ontario colleges Innovation is essential to the diversification of our local economies. With its campus infrastructure, technology, expert faculty, and programs, Northern College is well poised to assist industry through applied research,” said Gibbons.
